Fortunately for both of us, I learned how to solve this exact
problem on another mailing list I manage just 12 hours ago
(after many hours of NOT solving it).  So the timing of your
request is perfect.

The answer, BTW, was changing the permissions for directory
/var/lib/mailman/archives/private/ from 2770 to 775.  I am
not sure why it was sgid before.  And if your perfect timing
holds, you may encounter the same error with another mailing
list soon, and you will be able to help that sysadmin fix it.
